Position Overview:

The City of Kitchener Fire Department Communications Division is seeking highly motivated people-oriented individuals to work as Communication Operators in a fast paced, team environment.

 

As a 5th Class Communication Operator, you will receive and dispatch fire and medical emergencies for Fire Departments within the Region of Waterloo and beyond. You will operate computer programs including a computer aided dispatch system; telephone systems including 9-1-1; as well as radio systems and equipment.  You will also assist with support services, obtaining and maintaining resource and referral data, technical information and necessary records, logs and reports.  You will monitor alarm systems for fire, medical and gas alarms as well as trouble signals and provide assistance for Direct Detect customers.

 

Responsibilities:

  • A minimum of Grade 12 education.
  • A high level of accuracy and well developed keyboard skills.
  • Proven customer service excellence.
  • Proven verbal, written and electronic communication skills demonstrating effective listening.
  • Proven decision making proficiencies including the ability to prioritize swiftly.
  • The ability to react quickly and appropriately while remaining calm under stress.
  • The ability to work successfully, as part of a team, with minimal supervision.
  • Proven ability to multi task.
  • Must be reliable with a good attitude and employment record.

 

The following demonstrated knowledge and/or work experience would be considered an asset

  • Knowledge of communications equipment and computer applications including Intergraph CAD.
  • Previous dispatch experience in an emergency service environment.
  • NFPA 1061 Certification.
  • Class G Driver's License in good standing.

 

Candidates who are selected for further consideration may be required to successfully complete pre-hire testing as part of the screening process.

 

The successful candidates will be required to participate in an extensive training program and to successfully pass written and practical assessments as a condition of employment. 

 

A satisfactory Police Records Check screening which is deemed acceptable by the City of Kitchener is a requirement of this position.

 

AvailabilityCommunications Operators must be available to work a minimum of 2 weekends a month and must be available to work stat holidays.  Availability must be provided in advance.

 

Hours of work will include: evenings, weekends, holidays and shift work. As part-time employees the successful candidates must be available to work regular full-time hours for extended shift coverages as the department requires.
